during the mid-to-late-197o’s; buenos aires was subject to the rule of the brutal military dictatorship led by jorge videla. they disappeared an estimated 3o-5o,ooo argentineans; as a focused tactic of political repression [ the majority of their victims were; left-wing activists and militants, including trade unionists, students, journalists, marxists, peronist guerrillas and alleged sympathizers]. the vehicle of choice for the military junta death squads to carry out their clandestine kidnappings, was typically a dark green ford falcon [ styled after the american design ]. seeing such a car in those days often signaled the imminence of one’s disappearance into the torture chambers they left their victims to suffer in. the pictures shown were taken at an exhibit in the Espacio Memoria y Derechos Humanos [ which is the site of the former naval academy; where many of the disappeared were held, tortured and murdered ].

¿no es raro que él se falleció un par de meses antes de su centésimo cumple, el mismo día que las madres de la plaza de mayo hicieron su primera protesta contra la junta?

god bless tumblr. i stumbled across this womans fotos and can’t remember where; but her work is nothing short of amazing. i’m really into her ‘back to the future’ series. reconciliation between who i was as a kid and who i am now always makes me wonder. her photos seem to suggest its possible.

There was this amazing old, hardcore socialist man who lived in this bus down the block from my dad’s house in Buenos Aires. Only in my wildest dreams could I hope to get as hooked up as him.

maría elena walsh recently passed, and just wanted to tip my hat in her general direction. it was on the news a couple weeks ago, and my mom was teasing me about how i used to go batshit when she would put on one of her records when i was a kid. incidentally i remember her illustrations more than her music, but i suppose i’m just wired that way.

haven’t given mercedes sosa her propers either (unless you consider a half-assed post that got purged from a culture blog i’m no longer affiliated with), but it will come in the form of a screenprint sooner than later.
